A 10-0 run in the second quarter followed by an 11-0 run in the third period dashed Oak Harbor’s hopes of pulling off an upset victory over the Snohomish Panthers in a Friday WesCo North girls basketball game.
The Wildcats held a 10-6 lead after the first quarter of play, but Snohomish came roaring back outscoring Oak Harbor 16-9 in the second quarter and 22-3 in the third period to pick up a 53-39 victory and remain undefeated in league games.
“They’re good, they take you out of what you want to do,” coach Brett McLeod said.
Both teams missed a lot of shots in the first quarter which resulted in the low score and a lot of up and down action on the floor.
Jessica Denmon scored five of her game-high 16 points in the period for Oak Harbor.
As the second quarter began, Snohomish found its shooting range.
Emily Guthrie hit a pair of shots from 3-point range and teammates Karley Lampman and Katie Benson scored four points each, as the Panthers took a 22-19 halftime lead.
In the disastrous third quarter, Oak Harbor was held scoreless until the 3:33 mark when Denmon finally nailed a basket.
By that time, Snohomish had reeled off 11 straight points to increase the lead to 33-19.
Guthrie added her third 3-point basket in the quarter, Lampman scored twice from downtown and Ally Schmidt added five points, as part of the Panthers’ 22-point scoring eruption.
“In that third quarter, they just clamped down on defense and we didn’t handle it very well,” McLeod said. “They have a lot of weapons and started hitting their shots.”
Against the Panthers’ reserve players in the fourth quarter, Oak Harbor tallied 17 points including a 10-0 run late in the game, to narrow the lead that had swelled to 22 points at the end of the third quarter.
Jennifer Jansen scored eight points for the Wildcats and Nicole Mowbray had six.
Lampman scored 12 points to lead Snohomish, with teammates Schmidt and Benson adding 11 points each.
“I feel okay about it,” McLeod said. “We hate to lose, but we can take some things from this and feel good about some of the things we did.”
