The two-headed Oak Harbor High School girls basketball scoring machine wasn’t enough to carry the Wildcats Monday.

Oak Harbor fell 52-37 at Marysville-Pilchuck as only two Wildcats made field goals in the contest.

All season the duo of Jessica Denmon and Nicole Mowbray has carried the offensive load for Oak Harbor, but not to the extreme of Monday’s loss. Denmon piled up 25 points and Mowbray 11. That accounted for 36 of the Wildcats’ 37 points; Clarissa Abadesco added a free throw.

Meanwhile the Tomahawks had eight different players score as they lifted their league record to 7-1 and moved into a tie with Monroe atop the Wesco North.

Monday, Monroe, who was undefeated in league play, faced Cascade, who was winless in Wesco. The Bruins, however, upset the Bearcats 41-40. Sixth-place Oak Harbor (3-4, 6-5) goes to Monroe Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Oak Harbor hung with Marysville-Pilchuck for the first half, trailing 28-27 at the break. From there, the ‘Cats cooled off.

Coach Brett McLeod said, “We never challenged in the fourth quarter” as Oak Harbor netted just three points in the period and only 10 in the entire half.

Oak Harbor also had to abandon its favored 2-3 zone defense. McLeod said the Tomahawks were getting “easy looks” and forced the Wildcats to switch to a man-to-man.

He said his team “did some good things” while in the man-to-man, but it was out of its comfort zone.

McLeod noted that his team did itself in at the foul line. The Wildcats sank just seven of 17 foul shots; Marsyville-Pilchuck hit 18 of 25.
