Tyson leads Blue Heron in season opener / NWAC

NWAC’s Kierston Tyson collects five firsts, two seconds and a third in the first short-course meet of the season.

Kiersten Tyson, 10, paced the North Whidbey Aquatic Club attack in the first short-course meet of the season by winning five events at the Pacific Northwest October Challenge Oct. 8 and 9 in Bellingham.

The highlight of Tyson’s efforts was a 33.74 clocking in the 50-yard backstroke. She also collected a pair of seconds and a third.

Lindsay Brown, Grace Chargualaf, Lola Chargualaf, Ashleigh Merrill, Lecya Santiago and Chris Shashaty also earned firsts for the Blue Heron.

Others earning seconds were Haley Borja and Caitlin Dennen.

Jasmine Borja, Kyle Coonan and Ava Davis picked up third places.

In all, 33 Blue Heron competed.

Robin Zemlo and Davis received NWAC’s Most Improved Swimmers of the Meet honors from coach Dick Taylor.

The North Whidbey Aquatic Club hosts its Halloween Invitational Oct. 22 and 23. About 75 Canadian swimmers are scheduled to compete in the international meet.
