The Oak Harbor High School cross country team traveled to Seaside, Oregon, this past weekend to compete in the “3 Course Challenge.”
The competition consisted of three races: Easy, moderate and difficult, and the athletes “drew” to see which course they would run.
Oak Harbor did really well returning with two team trophies and 22 medals. Fourteen were team medals and eight were individual medals.
There were 98 teams at the event and the teams were separated into five divisions based on school enrollment.
Oak Harbor was in Division I, defined by schools with enrollment over 1,400 students.
Overall in Division I, the Oak Harbor boys team earned third place and was awarded a team plaque.
Tyler King and Richard Chong competed on the easy course with King finishing fourth overall and earning himself a medal.
Daniel Saiku and Michael Reith both competed on the moderate course.
On the difficult course, Kyle King, Alex Nydam, and Steve Nydam finished second, fourth and eighth and all three runners earned medals.
The Oak Harbor girls team earned a second-place finish in Division I.
Michelle Sandstrom and Jessica Denmon competed on the easy course and Denmon finished eighth.
Krissy McGill and Lauryn Wilson competed on the moderate course and McGill placed seventh overall.
Mietra Smollack, Adrianna Royal, and Abby Leete competed on the difficult course with Smollack and Royal finishing second and seventh, respectively.
Coaches Eric Peterson and Andy Wesley said the Wildcats did very well and they were extremely proud of the team and the individual performances turned in.
