Several outstanding individual efforts highlighted the Coupeville track team’s performance at the Cascade Conference championships last week at Cedarcrest High School in Duval.
The Wolves produced league and school records as well as posting nine season bests in the meet.
Several finals were run Wednesday along with most preliminaries. Tyler King won the 1,600 (4:21.99) and Hunter Hammer finished sixth in discus (125-02).
The pair continued to excel Friday.
King broke his own school record by over two seconds and set a new conference record while winning the 800 (1:55.34). Just 20 minutes later, King returned to the track to win the 3,200 (9:40.02).
King, a junior, has the fastest 1A state times in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.
Hammer captured the shot put (51-00.5) while breaking a 16-year old school record set by Todd Smith in 1992 (50-10). Coupeville coach Randy King said Hammer, a junior, is “new to track and field this year and has been working hard to learn his new craft.”
The Coupeville boys also scored in two relays with season best times. In the 4×100, Chase Bates, David Donley, Garret Franzen and Davion Watkins finished fourth (48.19).
King, Bates, Mitch Pelroy and Will Hoskins finished fifth in the 4×400 (3:39.09).
Bates also was fourth in the 400 (53.68) and Pelroy seventh in the 100 (12.2).
On the girls side, Jai’lysa Hoskins figured in all of the Wolves’ scoring. She was seventh in the 200 (27.81) and ran with Anna Bailey, Hannah Christensen and Nicole Becker to set season bests in the 4×100 (fourth, 57.44) and 4×200 (sixth, 2:02.44) relays.
King’s won both team titles, taking the boys meet with 116 points and the girls meet with 167. Coupeville was seventh in the boys standings with 59 points; the girls earned eighth with 10.
Coach King said at the beginning of the year that the Coupeville team was too small in numbers to win meets, so the emphasis would be on individual performances and improvement.
The Wolves now compete in the district track meet at King’s Thursday, May 20, and Saturday, May 22.
