The first game was close, the second not, as Marysville-Pilchuck High School tripped up the Oak Harbor baseball team twice this week.
The Tomahawks (3-1, 4-1) won 4-2 in extra innings in Oak Harbor Tuesday, March 26, the dumped the Wildcats 11-1 in five innings in Marysville Wednesday.
The teams finish their three-game set at 4 p.m. Friday in Oak Harbor (1-3, 2-5).
Errors and some bad luck stung Oak Harbor Tuesday.
After the Tomahawks scored in the first on a single, walk and error, Oak Harbor plated two in the second. Mike Maletto led off with a walk, stole second and scored on an error off the bat of Anthony Stewart. Stewart then scored on David Kusnick’s single.
Marysville-Pilchuck tied it in the fourth. Its leadoff hitter singled, moved to second on an error, then to third on a fly to right. He scored when the throw to third got away.
The Wildcats nearly scored in the sixth, but Stewart was cut down at the plate for the final out.
In the top of the eighth, Kyle Nobach’s hit to left field took an unusual hop and skipped over the head of Cory Cameron, resulting in a triple. The next batter hit a liner to left that escaped a valiant diving effort by Cameron for a double; he later scored on an error.
Andrew Snavely pitched into the seventh for Oak Harbor and gave up no earned runs on five hits, struck out two and walked one. He was relieved by Jack Richter.
Richter led the offense with two hits, including a double. Brent Mertins, Snavely and Kusnick singled.
There was no drama in Wednesday’s game as the Tomahawks scored nine runs over the first three innings. M-P set the tone when it scored four in the first on only two hits, thanks to two walks and three Wildcat errors.
Oak Harbor managed only two hits but had its chances, leaving eight on base. Tomahawk pitcher Jake Luton walked five and hit two batters.
Oak Harbor’s run came in the second when Cameron was hit by a pitch and scored on Clay Doughty’s single.
Kusnick recorded the only other hit.
Mertins pitched the first three innings, followed by Teddy Peterschmidt.
