Tomahawks pin Oak Harbor

In the final dual match of the season before the district tournament, the Oak Harbor wrestling team dropped a 54-21 decision to Marysville-Pilchuck Thursday night.

The Wildcats won just four bouts against the Tomahawks, but Oak Harbor coach Mike Crebbin said everyone on the team wrestled hard on Senior Night.

Colton Elliot got things started for the Wildcats in the first bout of the match, earning a 6-2 decision over Brian Donaldson at 103 pounds.

Just a freshman, Elliot took a 4-0 lead after the first period and maintained control of his opponent for the remainder of the bout.

“I’ve been wrestling a little tired lately, so I didn’t think I did as well as I could have,” Elliot said. “We’ve had a lot of matches lately and we’ve been getting home late.”

Crebbin said Colton defeated a good wrestler in Donaldson.

“At the Eastmont Tournament the kid he beat tonight was seeded higher than he was so they didn’t meet,” Crebbin said. “It was a big win for Colton tonight.”

In one of the more exciting bouts of the evening at 145 pounds, senior Miles Hartt scored a pin-fall victory over Marysville-Pilchuck senior David Hinckly with 12 seconds left in the second period.

“On Senior Night, I wanted to go out there and do my thing,” Hartt said. “Maybe even show off a little bit and that’s exactly what I did. Our team needed some points and I just did my job as a senior.”

Crebbin said they were still trying to figure things out for Miles.

“There is still some question as far as what weight class he will go in at the district,” he said. “He is peaking at the right time and we want to put him where he will have the best chance of getting his hand raised.”

At 171 pounds, junior Tyler Elliot picked up a pin-fall victory over Tomahawks senior Brad Dillman with 58 seconds remaining and Matt Johnston was the final winner for Oak Harbor in the 189-pound bout.

Holding a 13-6 lead at the end of two periods, Johnston put a basket cradle on Kyle Boze and pinned the Marysville-Pilchuck wrestler’s shoulders to the mat with 19 seconds remaining.

The next match for the Wildcats will be Class 4A WesCo District at Stanwood.

“Thirteen teams from the WesCo North and South will be at the district and there will be two wrestlers in each weight class,” Crebbin said. “It’s definitely going to be a meat grinder.”

The district tournament begins at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, and continues at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
