Tigers tame Wolves with 12-run inning / Softball

Granite Falls erupted for 12 runs in the fourth inning to pull away from the visiting Coupeville High School softball team in a 23-11 win Tuesday, March 26.

The Tigers led by only two, 8-6, heading into the bottom of the fourth and then put the game away with the big inning.

“They hit as well as advertised,” Coupeville coach Kevin McGranahan said. “They aren’t unbeatable, but we have to play error-free ball.”

Granite Falls stroked 17 hits, nine in the fourth inning. The potent Tiger offense has scored at least 12 runs in all but one game this season, including four with at least 20.

Coupeville committed six errors, five in the outfield, to help the Tigers along.

Granite Falls now has an early conference lead with the win, upping its league record to 2-0 (5-3 overall). Coupeville slipped to 1-1 (3-3).

The Tigers and Wolves combined to score in all but one half inning, as Coupeville also had a good day at the plate.

Sarah Wright went 3-for-4; Veronica Crownover had two hits, including a double; Emma Mathusek was 2-for-2 with two walks and three runs; Scout Smith walked and was hit by two pitches and scored four times; Chelsea Prescott had a hit and scored twice; and Izzy Wells singled.

“I am happy with how we hit against them and competed to the last out,” McGranahan said. “They are a good hitting team, we just need to clean up the errors.”

Coupeville goes to Sultan (0-0, 0-2) at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 28.
