The Coupeville High School fastpitch team had a chance to take the Cascade Conference lead, but Granite Falls remainded undefeated by thumping the host Wolves 13-2 in five innings Tuesday, March 27.

Coming off a one-win season in 2011, Coupeville turned its program around by winning four of its first six games this spring. Granite Falls (3-0), however, demonstrated to the Wolves what it would take to jump from worst to first.

The game was close, 3-1, until the fourth when the Tigers tacked on three more runs. Granite Falls cemented the win with a seven-run fifth.

Coupeville collected only four hits, singles by Ali Trumbull, Bessie Walstad, Haley Sherman and Hailey Hammer, while Tiger pitcher Lauren Harding fanned 10, five looking.

Co-coach David King said, “Their pitcher was the best we have seen all season, threw a little harder than others we have seen, but very hittable. Offensively this wasn’t our typical game and didn’t show what we can do.”

The Tiger offense produced 10 hits and received seven walks from pitchers Trumbull and McKayla Bailey.

Kind said, “Defensively we played a solid game with only two errors.”

He added, “We will get back to practice, make some corrections over the next few days and be ready for our next game against South Whidbey.”

Coupeville (3-2, 4-3) and the Falcons (2-3, 3-3) play in Coupeville at 4 p.m. Monday, April 2.
