Three advance to regionals

Oak Harbor wrestlers Karlson Miller, Jeff Lang and Sean O’Brien all earned automatic berths into this weekend’s 4A regional tournament by placing in the top five at last weekend’s 4A district tournament.

And then there were three.

Oak Harbor wrestlers Karlson Miller, Jeff Lang and Sean O’Brien all earned automatic berths into this weekend’s 4A regional tournament by placing in the top five at last weekend’s 4A district tournament.

“They all wrestled well enough to move on,” OHHS head coach Brian Farmer said.

Miller, a senior co-captain, finished second in the 112 pound division behind the state’s number-one ranked wrestler Kelly Kubec of Lake Stevens. Kubec handed Miller only his third loss of the season, gaining a 13-3 major decision.

“He’s pretty tough,” Miller said of Kubec.

Prior to his loss in the finals, Miller won his first match by technical fall and his second in a 6-1 decision over Cole Anderson of Everett.

Lang finished second at 135 pounds after number-one ranked Lester Brown of Lake Stevens pinned him 30 seconds into the second round.

On his way to the championship match, Lang earned a 24-10 major decision over Matt Beck of Everett and a 6-2 decision over Michael Irwin of Everett.

Lang’s victory over Irwin provided some sweet revenge to a 4-2 loss earlier in the season.

“That was pretty exciting, I was real happy about that,” he said.

While he’s making his first ever trip to the regional tournament, the junior has even higher aspirations.

“I expect to go to state,” Lang said.

Sean O’Brien’s road to regionals was a bit more difficult, but the junior managed to grapple his way to a third place finish.

O’Brien, who sat out all of last year, won his first match in an overtime decision over Andrew Lindaas of Mountlake Terrace. He lost his next match by major decision, won his next and defeated Lindaas one more time by injury default to take third.

“To come back and do this feels pretty good,” O’Brien said.

Oak Harbor sophomore David Wasickanin finished in sixth place and earned an alternate spot at 125 pounds. If anyone is unable to compete in his weight class he will get a shot to vie for the state tournament.

The 4A regional tournament begins at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 12 at Snohomish High School. Twenty-six teams from the WesCo North, WesCo South and South Puget Sound League North will take part. The top four placers in each weight class move on to state, Feb. 18-19 at the Tacoma Dome.
