Coupeville’s girls tennis team nipped Cavelero 3-2 in Lake Stevens Saturday, March 27.

Not only was the team score close, four of the five matches went three sets.

Julia Sierra Castaño won in first singles 6-2, 6-1 in the only two-set match of the day. She has yet to drop a set this year.

Coach Ken Stange said, “After splitting the first four games of the first set, Julia cruised to the win using her deep ground strokes to advance to the net.”

The No. 2 singles match was the final one contested Saturday and determined the final team score; Marie Hesselgrave took just over two hours to come from behind and win 6-7(5), 6-4, 10-8.

Stange said, “After dropping her first match of the season, Marie has won her last two contests by showing an ability to be consistent in seemingly never-ending points.”

Jessica Blanchette and Jordan Akins were edged in first doubles 6-0, 4-6, 7-10.

The No. 2 doubles team of Lexi Blanchette and Lily Doyle also dropped a close match, 2-6, 6-4, 3-10.

Amanda d’Almeida and Brooke Monroe slipped by in third doubles 7-5, 3-6, 10-8.

Stange said, “The freshman duo fought the entire way, finding ways to outlast their opponents.” He added that all of the freshmen continue to improve with every practice and match. He has used four players in the No. 3 doubles slot during Coupeville’s three matches this year and CHS has won each time.

The Wolves, 3-0 for the year, travel to South Whidbey Tuesday, March 30, in a make-up of last week’s rain out.
