Tennis: Oak Harbor starts season with 4-3 win

Sweeping the singles events, the Oak Harbor girls tennis team squeaked out a 4-3 season-opening win and Western Conference match at Monroe Monday, March 15.

Sweeping the singles events, the Oak Harbor girls tennis team squeaked out a 4-3 season-opening win and Western Conference match at Monroe Monday, March 15.

The Wildcats won in straight sets in the first, second and fourth singles matches.

Junior Cady O’Dell breezed through first singles 6-0, 6-0; and senior Erin Neilon took second singles 6-0, 6-2.

Junior Jordan Faralan won 6-4, 6-2 in fourth singles.

The key contest of the day was No. 3 singles; coach Horace Mells called it a “hard-fought three-setter.”

Junior Clarissa Abadesco took the first set 6-3, then dropped the second 6-4.

With the team score tied at 3-3 and with both clubs waiting for the outcome of the final set to determine the match, Abadesco came back to win 6-4 to secure the win for herself and the Wildcats.

In doubles action, sophomores Jennifer Fremd and Alexa Holmly fell 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 match.

Juniors Jennifer Bowers and Kerry Rathsabanhdith were edged 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.

In third doubles, sophomores Shannon Neilon and Joyce Abides lost 6-4, 7-5.

Summing up the day, Mells said, “This was a close contest that could have gone either way.”

Oak Harbor holds its first home match of the season Wednesday at 3:45 against Lake Stevens.
