The Coupeville High School girls tennis team built some momentum for Friday’s match with rival Friday Harbor by defeating host Granite Falls 4-3 Wednesday, April 14.

The Wolves will entertain Friday Harbor April 16 at 3:45. The match is the first of three with the Wolverines, the only other 1A team in the district, that will determine the league champion.

In the win over Granite Falls, Coupeville picked up two victories in singles and doubles.

Julia Sierra Castaño remained undefeated by winning No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-3.

In No. 3 singles, Lexi Blanchette, who normally plays No. 2 doubles, won 6-4, 6-1. With the score tied 4-4 in the first set, Blanchette used her “consistency and tenacity” to dominate the remainder of the match, according to coach Ken Stange.

Coupeville picked up its third point in No. 3 doubles with a 6-4, 6-1 win by Brooke Monroe and Taylor Herreman.

The clinching point came in No. 2 doubles. Freshmen Jessica Riddle and Amanda d’Almeida, who moved up from their usual No. 3 doubles spot, came back to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

All three of the Wolves losses where in close matches, two going three sets: No. 1 doubles, Jessica Blanchette/Jordan Akins 3-6, 4-6; No. 2 singles, Marie Hesselgrave, 3-6, 6-4, 6-7(9-11); and No. 4 singles, Lily Doyle, 6-4, 2-6, 4-6.

Stange said, “This season has been fun because 13 girls have stepped up to help our varsity team win matches so far. Many of our players continue to develop and improve their games, which bodes well for the future.”
