Coupeville completed its season sweep over Friday Harbor in boys tennis with a 5-0 win in Coupeville Friday, Oct. 15, wrapping up the league title in the process.

The two teams, the only 1A schools in the district, will meet again this Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 1:30 in Coupeville in the district tournament.

The conference crown is the second straight for the Wolves after Friday Harbor held the title for three years.

Last Friday’s regular season finale was the first time Coupeville blanked the Wolverines this year after two 4-1 wins.

With the championship already guaranteed because of Coupeville’s two earlier wins over Friday Harbor, coach Ken Stange moved his normal No. 2 singles player, Chase Bates, to the No. 1 slot to see he how he would fare against the Wolverines’ best, Hayden Place. Bates won 6-4, 7-5.

In No. 2 singles, Nic Anthony cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win.

In a likely preview of the district finals double championship match, Coupeville’s Nate Lamb and Sam Weaver defeated Parker Satin and Ryan Cole 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

Stange said, “Sam was ferocious at the net, using sharp angled shots…while Nate used his superb ground strokes to hit fabulous passing shots.”

In No. 2 doubles, Ben Hayes (normally the No. 1 singles player) and Larry Hurlburt won 6-1, 6-2, while Ben Wehrman and Jason Knoll took third doubles 6-0, 6-1.
