Tennins team on a roll

After several years of having younger players take the court against more experienced opponents, the Oak Harbor High School tennis team has become one to be reckoned with in the WesCo North League.

Coming off a 6-1 victory over Lake Stevens Monday afternoon, the Wildcats notched their second straight league victory on Wednesday, dumping Monroe 4-3.

Against Lake Stevens, Danny Lura, Tyler Abrahamse, Derek Thomas and Ryan Evans swept the singles matches for Oak Harbor and the first and second doubles teams of Jordan Kingma and Joel Valles, and Paul Jewell and Chris Bragg were also winners.

Coach Horace Mells said he is very pleased with the way the team has been playing.

“We have played some good matches so far this season,” he said. “We had a couple slip away on us that could have easily gone the other way.”

In the opening match of the season Sept. 4, the Wildcats dropped a close 4-3 decision to Cascade.

“One of the matches against Cascade went to three sets and we ended up losing,” Mells said. “If we could have won that final set, we would have won the match.”

After that, Oak Harbor came back with a 6-1 win over Arlington before being blown out 7-0 by the powerful Snohomish team.

The Wildcats bounced back to beat Everett 5-2 and then lost to Stanwood by a 5-2 score.

In the most recent match against the Monroe Bearcats, Derek Thomas was a 6-3, 6-0 winner in third singles and teammate Ryan Evans won 7-5, 6-1 in the fourth singles match.

After Monroe took a 3-2 lead

with a win in first doubles, the duo of Paul Jewell and Chris Bragg came through with a three set 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 win in second doubles leaving the deciding match up to the third doubles team.

As things turned out, the Monroe team of Adam Nelson and Jarad Edwards were no match for senior Josh Whitley and freshman Josh Evans who came through for the Wildcats with a resounding 6-0, 6-1 win.

Oak Harbor now has a 4-3 record in the WesCo North.
