Talented Warriors tame Wildcats / Girls basketball

The Edmonds-Woodway High School girls basketball team, pre-season favorites to win the Wesco 3A championship, showed why with a convincing 64-15 win at Oak Harbor Tuesday, Dec. 18.

The Wildcats (0-3, 2-5) will attempt to bounce back when they travel to Lynnwood (2-1, 4-3) at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21.

In the pre-season poll of the 15 Wesco coaches, Edmonds-Woodway tied Snohomish in points atop the list. Six coaches tabbed the Warriors to win the title; three chose Snohomish.

In the win over Oak Harbor, Edmonds-Woodway’s full-court press provided immediate results. The Warriors scored 9 points in just over one minute, 7 off turnovers, before the Wildcats put up a shot.

Oak Harbor’s Miranda Wilson sank a three-pointer, then the Warriors went up 17-3 before the Wildcats attempted another field goal.

E-W (3-0, 5-1) stopped pressing after the first quarter when it led 26-3.

The Warriors’ 23-0 run that bridged the first two periods ended when Wilson hit another three-ball with 5:40 left in the half, making it 32-6.

E-W, no longer pressing, turned to long range to do its damage, knocking down six three-pointers in the second quarter, to take a 50-11 lead at the break.

The Warriors blanked Oak Harbor in the third period and led 59-11 going into the fourth.

Wilson ended the night with 9 points; Mikhaela Cortez, Sarah Mensah and Rosa Simpliciano had 2 each.

All 10 Warriors scored, led by Rebekah Dasalla-Good with 12, 7 coming in a 30-second span in the first 62 seconds of the game.

“They (Edmonds-Woodway) was picked to finish first for a reason,” Oak Harbor coach Jon Atkins said.

“We are playing in a tough stretch in our schedule,” he added, “and we need to stick together.”

There were not many highlights for the Wildcats in the game, Atkins said, but he did like the rebounding effort of Payton Parks.
