Talented Knights trounce Wolves

Coupeville still seeking first league victory

The Coupeville boys basketball team played hard and never gave up, but they were no match for the big, talented King’s Knights in a Cascade League game Friday.

Standing 6-foot-10, King’s senior post Charlie Enquist scored 16 points, 12 of which came in the third quarter, and teammate Trey Wright added 15, including three from 3-point range, as the Knights rolled over the Wolves 67-30.

The victory kept the league-leading Knights undefeated at 7-0 and 11-1 overall, while Coupeville (0-7, 4-9), is still seeking its first league victory of the season.

“They execute and are a very patient team,” a philosophical Coupeville coach Randy King said after the game. “For a team that big, they really run the floor well. There’s a reason they beat a pretty good Class 4A team in Kentridge.”

King’s took an 11-3 lead after the first eight minutes and put 19 more points on the board in the second quarter to hold a 30-13 halftime advantage.

“They’re big, fast and strong and they’re really good,” junior James Smith said. “We showed signs where we played really good and showed signs were we could have done better. We’re getting better every game and it would be nice to pick up a couple of wins before the playoffs. I think we’ll be all right.”

Smith led Coupeville in scoring with 10 points.

King’s tacked on 20 points in the third period and hit for 17 more over the final eight minutes of the game, while holding the Wolves to just 17 points in the second half.

“We played hard until the end, that’s all we can do,” King said.

Kramer O’Keefe scored six points for the Wolves and Brian Miller was held to just four.

Coupeville travels to South Whidbey on Friday and then squares off against Oak Harbor on the Wildcats’ home court in a 7:30 p.m. matchup Jan. 29.
