Swim: Focus shifts this year for Wildcats

The emphasis of the Oak Harbor High School swim and dive team has shifted this year.

The emphasis of the Oak Harbor High School swim and dive team has shifted this year.

The Wildcats won the Wesco North last fall, but with less depth this year, coach Erika Miller said the focus is on qualifying as many individuals as possible for the district meet and not team wins.

Oak Harbor lost to Snohomish 110-70 and Glacier Peak 110-76 Wednesday, Sept. 22, at John Vanderzicht Pool.

The ‘Cats host Cascade and Stanwood Monday, Sept. 27, at 6 p.m.

Miller said Oak Harbor has formed a club, Aqua Imperium, within the team for those who want to work at qualifying for every district event. The group, also known good naturedly as the Pumpkin Princesses, is made up of Tori Nickerson, Akasha Trisler, Ciara Hu, Karina Concepcion, Irysh Concepcion and Therese Desquitado.

Miller said, “Everything they have swum this year they have made it.”

The goal will require swimmers to attempt events that are not their strongest.

In Wednesday’s meet, Trisler was the only Oak Harbor winner, taking the 100 meter breaststroke in 1:19.53.

Coupeville’s Rachel Weinstein met the state 2A qualifying time while finishing second in the 400 (5:03.22); she was also second in the 200 free (2:20.89).

Other top five finishes for Oak Harbor include the following:

Second: Hu, diving, 124, and 100 backstroke, 1:13.58; 200 meter free relay, Trisler, Hu, Nickerson, Karina Concepcion, 1:58.86; 400 free relay, Karina Concepcion, Trisler, Nickerson, Hu, 4:32.85.
