Spring prep preview / Coupeville tennis

The goals are lofty for the two-time defending champion Coupeville High School tennis team this year.

The Wolves haven’t lost a conference match since joining the Olympic League 1A Division three years ago, and winning a third title is certainly in reach this season.

Longtime coach Ken Stange has more goals.

“Five times I’ve been fortunate enough to coach players who have qualified for state,” he said. “This year, for the first time, I feel that we have an excellent shot at taking more than one entry into the state tourney.”

The Wolves return both the league’s singles champion, senior Valen Trujillo, and the league’s doubles champions, juniors Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger.

“Valen, Payton and Sage have the ability, mindset and desire to (qualify for state),” he said. “I look forward to seeing them progress toward the end goal.”

In addition, Stange would like to have two singles players and a pair of doubles teams qualify for district.

Other returning letter winners are senior Bree Daigneault and juniors Maggie Crimmins and Kameryn St. Onge.

“We will be strong at the top of our lineup, and that will go a long way to ensuring we can secure a third straight 1A Oly League title,” Stange said. “Another strength is our team’s work ethic. They’ve been doing some conditioning work, and they have been working hard, despite the wind and rain.”

Stange also lauded his team’s leadership: “Valen and Bree are vocal leaders who encourage and inspire other players. Then there is Payton and Sage, who lead by quiet example. It’s a great balance of styles.”

Key newcomers are senior exchange student Fanny Deprelle and freshmen Avalon Renninger and Zoe Trujillo.

Stange expects a fourth doubles team to emerge from senior exchange student Sophie Furtjes; juniors Heather Nastali and Claire Mietus; sophomores Abby Hamilton and Julie Bucio; and freshmen Tia Wurzrainer, Nanci Melendrez, Rubi Melendrez and Jillian Mayne.

“We are untested in our bottom half of the lineup,” Stange said. “It’s going to be a learn-as-we-play type of situation.”

The Wolves (10-3 and 5-0 in 2016) play at 3 p.m. at Port Angeles Monday, March 13. The first home match is 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 16, with Sequim.
