Tryouts for cheer team

Oak Harbor High School Wildcat cheer tryouts for the 2008 fall season will be May 20 through May 23 from 2:45 to 5:30 p.m. at the high school gym. Tryouts are open to students currently in the eighth through 11th grade.

Tryout packets are available in the front offices of the middle and high schools. Remember, all students must have a current physical in order to participate.

Pitch, hit and run competition

The Aquafina pitch, hit and run competition hosted by NAS Whidbey Island Youth Activities and North Whidbey Little League is scheduled for noon Sunday, May 18, at Windjammer Park.

This is a free event for all community youth ages 7 to 14 (age as of July 17, 2008).

Kids will compete in four age groups for time, accuracy and distance. There will be an all-around winner and champions for pitching, hitting and running.

Cleats must be rubber for competition. Participants need to pre-register for this event at the Youth Activities Center. Participants must turn in a copy of their birth certificate upon registration.

Fly fishing anglers meet

The Whidbey Island Fly Fishing Club will have its May meeting today, Wednesday, May 14, at the Race Road fire house south of Coupeville.

Plan to gather at 6:30 p.m., with the featured program at 7 p.m.

Members bring a friend and non-member guests are welcome.

Lions Club swim lessons

For the 49th year, the Coupeville Lions Club will once again be offering swimming lessons for children ages 4 and older at the Admirals’ Cove pool.

The Learn-to-Swim lessons will run for eight days from June 23 to June 27 and June 30 to July 2.

Lessons are 30 minutes each and will be scheduled from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost for the session is $25 per child due at registration.

This is a Red Cross certified program and is provided by the Coupeville Lions as one of their many community service projects.

Registration for the Learn-to-Swim Program for new and returning swimmers will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at the Coupeville Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 608 N. Main St. Telephone registrations will be accepted at 678-6782 beginning May 23, but you will have a better chance of getting the class/time that you want if you can register in person. Mail-in registration for all swimmers previously enrolled in the program opened May 5.

Summer tennis camp at OHHS

Oak Harbor High School tennis coach Horace Mells will be offering tennis camps on the high school courts beginning Monday, June 23.

These camps are for players of all ages, and continue through Aug. 22.

The youth camp is for players entering grade three and above will be held June 23 through July 30 at a cost of $45 per player, or $75 for a family of two.

For a family of three, the cost is $100 and add $20 per player for families over three. The fees include youth tournaments, T-shirts and awards.

Classes will be in eight sections, each 30 minutes in length, from 9:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Adult camp will run from June 24 to July 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Beginners to intermediate camp is from 6 to 7 p.m. and intermediate to advanced players meet from 7 to 8 p.m.

The cost for the adult camp is $45 per player.

Youth sailing lessons at marina

Three sessions of beginning and intermediate youth sailing lessons will be offered by the Oak Harbor Youth Sailing Foundation this summer at the Oak Harbor Marina.

Participants, ages 9 and older, will learn how to sail on El Toro sailboats.

They will learn the basics of rigging the boat, steering techniques, sailing rules, sail trim, racing rules, and boating safety.

The cost of each session is $75 and $12 for the sailing textbook which can be purchased at the first class session.

Session 1 is a weekend a session and will be held May 31, June 1, 7, 8, 21 and 22.

Session 2 is a sailing camp and will be held June 23 through June 28.

Session 3 is another weekend session and will be held July 12, 13, 19, 20, Aug. 2 and 3. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Registrations are being taken by sending a check to OHYS, PO Box 2876, Oak Harbor, WA 98277.

Boat Smart class begins May 17

The Deception Pass Sail & Power Squadron is offering a Boat Smart class at the Whidbey Island campus of Skagit Valley College, Hayes Hall Room 113, 1900 SE Pioneer Way in Oak Harbor beginning Saturday, May 17

This class covers boating basics, including rules of the road, boating safety, required equipment, navigational aids, radio operations and an introduction to chart reading.

The course will qualify boaters for the new Washington State safe boating card, which is now available for $10, and a copy of your Boat Smart Certificate after passing the test.

Registration and payment is at 8 a.m. on May 17 and the class runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on that day.

Classes on May 19 and May 20 are from 7 to 9 p.m.

The cost is $25 for books and the examination. Spouses or family members who share a book are charged $13.

Oak Harbor High School girls basketball coach Brett McLeod, his coaching staff and players invite all girls in grades second through eighth to attend a summer basketball camp at the high school Monday through Thursday, July 28 to 31.

This is a chance to come out and work on your basketball skills, under the guidance of the Wildcats’ coaches and players.

The cost of the camp is $55 per player, with a $10 discount if registered by June 1, and includes a long-sleeve T-shirt and a water bottle.

Registrations must be postmarked no later than June 15 to receive the gear.

This camp is for girls of all skill levels and will serve as a great way to have some fun this summer.

The Deception Pass Sail and Power Squadron is planning a boat fair at the Oak Harbor Marina Saturday and Sunday, June 7 and 8.

The fair is free and open to the public.

Seminars, demonstrations boat safety inspections, children’s activities are planned, and there is something of interest for every member of the family.

The purpose of the fair is to promote boating safety and enjoyment while on the water.
