Splashers finish season with win

What a way to end the regular season!

The Oak Harbor High School swim team won every event, finished first, second and third in one relay and three individual events, and scored the most points of the season in a dominating 140-37 victory over Everett Wednesday evening at John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool.

“It was a fun way to end the year,” coach Erika Miller said. “All the girls swam well and although we didn’t set any state qualifying marks, we got three or four more district qualifying times which we were hoping for.”

Freshman swimmers Tori Nickerson, Abby Rankin and Rachel Weinstein came away as some of the big winners.

Nickerson had a first-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly and

was also a member of the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams, and swam the breaststroke leg on the winning 200 medley relay team.

“I was trying to get a 1:16 in the 100 butterfly and I got a 1:15, so that was pretty good,” she said. “My knee hurts a little when I do the breaststroke kick and the dolphin kick on the butterfly, but it’s okay.”

Weinstein won the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke events, and was also a member of the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.

“I didn’t have a lot of competition in the breaststroke so my time of 1:06 was better than I thought,” she said. “It’s kind of hard to swim really fast times where there isn’t anyone pushing you.”

Rankin won the 200 individual medley with teammate McKenna Yockey second. Yockey was also

second in the 100 backstroke.

The pair were also on the second-place finishing 200 medley relay team.

“I wanted to get a district time in the individual medley and I did,” Rankin said.

Yockey said she thought she swam as good as she could have in the individual medley. “I didn’t have any trouble with any of my strokes and I’m happy with my second-place finish,” she said.

Sophomore Kim Klieman won the 50 freestyle and was also on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams.

“I did a good flip turn in the 50 which I usually don’t do so I was happy about that,” she said. “I also remembered to kick when I went off. It was a pretty good race and I got first so I’m happy.”
