“The Speed Demon Racers, Oak Harbor’s inline speed skating club, grabbed a number of trophies at the recent Northwest Regional Championships in Portland.Josh Brown finished fifth in the 300-meter race preliminaries. Kira Brown, 7, took a second place in both her 200- and 300-meter events.Brandon Daigle, 9, placed second overall in the Juvenile Boys division. He took first place in the 300, second in the 200- and 500-meter.Cyla Burnette, 11, returning for her second year of skating, had a tough road ahead of her in the Junior Olympic Elementary Girls. Burnette was undefeated all year, but had to contend with both Carrissa Sada and Heidi Watterson, her teammates in competition. She continued her winning streak, winning both of her division races. Having not done well in a tough 300, Watterson finished third in her 500, and obtained an overall fourth. Audrey Neeley, 12, earned a fourth-place medal by finishing fourth in both the 300 and 700 events. Jerry Cruz, 15, had two competitors and was outgunned in the final laps of both the 500- and 1000-meter events. Cruz placed third overall, his first medal in his four-year skating career.Christina Bigelow, 16, raced the Sophomore Ladies division. She ran away from the pack in the 500 to finish first. A disputed no-call by the official on the last lap of the race found Bigelow in second at the finish line, and tied for overall points. She placed second overall. Each Speed Demon Racer represented their club well to the rest of the Northwest Region, coach Pamela Sada said.National Championships will be held this year in Lincoln, Neb.
