South Whidbey makes a splash at state meet

South Whidbey made a strong showing at the Boys Swim 1A/2A State Meet last week.

Four South Whidbey Falcons — and one lone Coupeville Wolf — made a strong showing at the Boys Swim 1A/2A State Meet last week.

Held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, the meet took place Feb. 15-17.

The Falcons scored eighth overall as a team, with several individual fifth place finishes. Sophomore Jack Hempel got fifth in both the 50 yard freestyle and in the 100 yard freestyle. Sophomore Rowan Jung placed fifth in both the 200 yard freestyle and in the 500 yard freestyle. Hempel, Jung, freshman Caleb Lewis and junior Tyson Prendergast earned fifth place in the 400 yard freestyle relay; the team came into the meet as the 14th seed. Lewis also placed 14th in the 100 yard backstroke.

Sophomore Finn Price, the only swimmer from Coupeville, finished ninth in the 200 yard freestyle and 13th in the 100 yard freestyle. The one-man team scored 30th overall at the meet.

All five boys were coached this season by Chris Erickson of the Mukilteo School District and Rob Jung, a South Whidbey resident.

Rob Jung said the 400 yard freestyle relay, the last event of the meet, gave the South Whidbey boys enough points to tie for eighth overall. He added that all five boys have a combined average GPA that’s above 3.9.

“All return next year, dang good meet this year,” Erickson said.
