After losing a heartbreaker in a shootout to host Cedarcrest Friday, April 15, the Coupeville soccer team rebounded to thump visiting Friday Harbor 4-0 Saturday, April 16.

The Wolves defeated Cedarcrest in a shootout earlier this spring, and the Red Wolves (6-3-1, 6-3) returned the favor by scoring in the sudden death portion of Friday’s shootout to earn the Cascade Conference win.

Coupeville keeper Isaac Wacker and Cedarcrest goalie Sean Morris blanked their opponents through regulation and two overtime periods.

In the five-shot shootout, Cedarcrest hit its first four shots. The Wolves countered with goals from Ben Hayes and Nathan Lamb before a miss by Nevin Miranda. Jack Caselden hit for the Wovles, then Wacker stopped Cedarcrest’s fifth shot and Andre Stone drove home a clutch goal to tie it up.

In sudden death, Cedarcrest drilled home its first shot, then Morris used a foot-save to deny Luke Pelant and earn the win.

Coupeville coach Paul Mendes said, “The game was an end-to-end, even match with both teams creating chances and making big defensive plays to keep the score at zero. Isaac Wacker made some super saves throughout the game to keep us in it. It was good for us to earn another shutout against a good team away from home on artificial turf.”

Against Friday Harbor, Coupeville scored three times in the second half to pull away.

The Wolves took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a goal from Miranda on a breakaway after a feed from Hayes.

Zach Forland pounded in a loose ball in front of the net for the second goal, and then Josh Wilsey rocketed a shot in from on top of the 18 in the 73rd minute.

Mendes said “the goal of the game” came from freshman Sean Donley in the 85th minute.

Mendes said, “After receiving a pass 30 yards out, close to the sideline, Sean quickly turned on the first defender to get past him, two more defenders approached and Sean split them as he faked a cross and kept the ball heading for goal. Now close to the goal, another defender arrived and Sean faked a shot and kept the ball to beat him. The last defender to beat was now the goalkeeper and Sean beat him as he drilled a quick shot, moving right to left across the face of the goal from 12 yards out…A great way to end a long, hard week.”

Keeper Nic Anthony earned the shutout for the Wolves.

Coupeville (4-6-1, 3-6) hosts first-place King’s (9-1) Tuesday, April 19, at 5:45 p.m.
