Breaking out of a season-long struggle, the Oak Harbor soccer team smacked visiting Mountlake Terrace 6-3 Monday, March 28.
Michael Shevchuk scored four goals and Matt Jensen added two more and an assist in Oak Harbor’s first win of the season in seven matches. The Hawks remain winless.
Shevchuk, who scored the first four goals, sat for 18 minutes in the second half and then played defense the final 10 minutes of the match.
He got the scoring started with a goal off a penalty kick in the sixth minute.
Shevchuk added two more goals in the final six minutes of the half on assists from Caleb Gatica-Cortes and Jensen.
Shevchuk, with help again from Gatica-Cortes, made it 4-0 nine minutes into the second half.
Jensen finished the Oak Harbor scoring with two goals, the first assisted by Vance Freitas at the 62-minute mark and final at the 67th minute with an assist from Gavin Stewart.
Keeper Tucker Lundstrom anchored the defense and gave up only a penalty kick goal during his stint guarding the net.
Assistant coach Jeff Laiblin, who guided the Wildcats because head coach Brian Thompson was attending a teachers’ conference, said, “We’ve been close so many times it’s nice to get the monkey off our backs.”
He added, “These kids really do deserve this.”
The Wildcats now take on undefeated Shorewood (5-0) at Shoreline Stadium Monday, April 4, at 7 p.m.
