Soccer: Early goals carry Tigers past Wolves

Granite Falls scored two quick first half goals and the Coupeville girls soccer team couldn’t recover as the Tigers defeating the visiting Wolves 2-0 Tuesday, Sept. 28.

Coupeville coach Mike Thornton said, “It was a tale of two halves. We switched the formation that we were playing and created more chances in the second half and almost got a couple of goals. I thought the girls were going to come back.”

The best chance for Coupeville to score came at the 10 minute mark when the Wolves were awarded a penalty kick, but the Tiger keeper snuffed the attempt.

Cassie Babcock played in the goal for Coupeville for the second half and shut out Granite Falls (4-2, 5-3).

The Wolves “kept the pressure on to the end,” Thornton said, but couldn’t find the net.

He added, “This team seems so close to becoming a contender. We have to just keep working hard and we will get there.”

Coupeville (1-4, 3-4) takes on Sultan (0-5, 0-6) Thursday, Sept. 30., at 6 p.m. at Mickey Clark Field.
