In a match of missed opportunities, the Coupeville soccer team lost 2-0 to Lakewood in the Cascade Conference finale at Mickey Clark Field Friday, April 29.

The Wolves (5-10-1, 4-10) now head to Meridian (5-9-1) for the district tournament Thursday, May 5, at 5 p.m. in a loser-out, winner to tri-district game.

Lakewood (6-10, 5-9) broke up a 0-0 tie in the 53rd minute then added a late goal to finish off the Wolves.

Coupeville coach Paul Mendes said the first Cougar goal “came on a well-executed counterattack after we were pressing them hard in their goal area.”

Mendes added, “It was a tough loss. We played well enough to create a number of scoring chances throughout the game. We got through their defense at least a half dozen times to be left one-on-one with their goalkeeper, but could not put the ball in the net. Their two goalkeepers stepped up to make huge saves in both halves.”

The Wolves tried a variety of combinations in their attack, Mendes said, and “fought hard to the end.”

“We need to keep working on being more ruthless with our opportunities to tilt these close games our way,” Mendes said.
