Mietra Smollack was the first-place finisher for the Oak Harbor Wildcat girls at district, capturing the 1,600-meter run in a meet-record time of 5:04.95.

Smollack’s performance was tops for Wildcats competing in last Wednesday and Friday’s District 1/4A track meet at Shoreline, but she wasn’t alone in doing well.

Oak Harbor will be represented by several top competitors, all with good chances of earning medals at the Class 4A state meet scheduled for May 25 and 26 in Pasco.

As a team, the Wildcat girls finished sixth at the district scoring 50 points.

Snohomish from the WesCo North won the meet with 168 points,

Stanwood and Marysville-Pilchuck, also WesCo North teams, finished second and third with 126 and 101 points, respectively.

For the boys, Lake Stevens was the overall winner with 159 points, followed by Kamiak with 92.5 and Mariner with 83.

Oak Harbor finished in 10th place with 33 points.

“Overall, the Oak Harbor High School track program had a great season and we will have six of our athletes at the state meet,” coach Eric Peterson said. “Two of our athletes qualified for the state in three different events. All of our kids did well and even the newcomers who competed at the district meet but didn’t qualify for the state had some good times and distances.”

Individually, Smollack was the only first-place finisher for the Wildcat girls at district with her impressive win in the 1,600. The league champion in both the 800 and 1,600 meter events, Smollack ran a time of 2:17.70 in the 800 meters to finish second, and teamed with Sarah Gordon, Kirsten Roof and Carson McKole to finish second in the 800-meter relay in a time of 1:49.23.

McKole, who won the league championships in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, finished second in the 100 at the district in a time of 12.84, and followed up with a third-place finish in the 200 at 26.26 to earn a trip to Pasco in both events.

For the boys, league and district champion Will Hunter will be the Wildcats’ representative in the shot put after a throw of 54-feet, 4.5 inches at the district meet, more than three-feet further than the second place finisher. He will be joined by Rodrick Rumble who is also on his way to Pasco after a 6-feet, 2-inch leap in the high jump earned him a second-place finish.
