Shattered Wolves place second

Coupeville tennis coach Ken Stange said the team was “shattered” by spring break vacations that resulted in him having to switch players around for Saturday’s three-way match against league opponents Darrington and Friday Harbor.

However, the Wolves rose to the occasion, winning the singles half of the match and placing second in doubles.

“I’ve been impressed this year,” Stange said. “The players are really enthusiastic and we have a lot of people who keep getting better and better. We played really strong in singles matches today.”

In the eight singles matches played, the Wolves finished second, fourth and fifth.

The championship match pitted Coupeville’s first singles player Kaitlyn Torres against Friday Harbor number one player, Chelsea Pasco, with Torres coming out on the short end of a 6-2 score.

Ashley Sanders defeated Jenni Standt from Friday Harbor 6-2 to finish in fourth place and Anna Myer lost to Darrington’s Jessie Loggins 6-2 to finish fifth.

“Anna started out on the JVs and got bumped up for this match,” Stange said. “In the opening round, she beat Darrington’s number one player 6-1.”

Player switches in doubles forced Coupeville’s Laura Millhouse and Megan Meyer to play in the first position and the duo came through with a fifth-place finish.

The second doubles team of Hannah Merrill and Hayley Workman lost in the opening round to Darrington’s first team, but battled through the next two rounds to defeat Friday Harbor’s third team of Kira Dunn and Charlotte Guard 6-2 to finish in fourth place.

Coupeville’s third team of Jordan Akins and Marie Hesselgrave finished in seventh place.

Friday Harbor was the overall winner with 34 points, Coupeville was second with 28 and Darrington scored 16 points to finish third.

“We have played several matches against junior varsity and C teams in recent weeks and those matches have gotten us prepared for the resumption of league play,” Stange said.
