The Shorecrest High School baseball team clubbed 14 hits en route to a 9-4 win in Oak Harbor Tuesday, March 27, and swept the two-game series with the Wildcats.

The Scots (2-0, 5-1) used seven hits and two walks against Oak Harbor starter Zach Zimmer to go up 5-0 after three innings.

The dormant Oak Harbor offense finally woke up in the fifth and scored three runs to get within 5-3. The teams traded runs in the sixth before Shorecrest scored three runs (two unearned) in the seventh.

Zimmer, who recorded seven strikeouts in three innings of work, was replaced by Jack Richter in the fourth. Richter kept the Scots off the board until they scored an unearned run in the sixth.

Zimmer started the Oak Harbor scoring in the fourth with a leadoff triple. Grant Schroeder, who went 3-for-3 for the day with a pair of RBI, singled home Zimmer. Sam Glavick’s line-drive got by the Scot right fielder for a three-base error and scored Schroeder. Austyn Walker’s single scored Glavick.

After the Scots scored an unearned run in the sixth, Anthony Stewart walked to start the Wildcat half of the inning and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Schroeder. That made it 6-4 before the Scots’ three-run seventh.

The Wildcats were poised to do more damage the late in the game but left seven runners stranded over the final three innings.

Walker finished with two hits, including a double and RBI, and Oak Harbor earned singles from Richter, Glavick and Brent Mertins.

Though Oak Harbor had nine hits, coach Tyson VanDam was disappointed in his team’s approach at the plate: “We played young and scored. We weren’t aggressive at the dish; we were looking for walks.”

Oak Harbor’s game at Marysville Getchell originaly scheduled for Wednesday was rained out both Wednesday and Thursday.

The Wildcats (0-2, 2-3) and Chargers (0-2, 0-6) will now play a double header in Oak Harbor at 2 p.m. Friday, March 30.
