Carter Saar’s comeback win in third singles helped the Oak Harbor High School tennis team to a 4-3 win over visiting Marysville Getchell Thursday, Oct. 4.

Oak Harbor’s David Kusnick won a second-set tie-breaker 12-10 to capture second singles 6-4, 7-6 and even the team score at three points apiece. The two schools then waited for the third singles match to end to decide the team result.

Saar dropped his first set to Navdeep Manhas 4-6, then edged out the second set 7-6(5) before rolling to a 6-1 win in the third.

Coach Horace Mells said Saar “appeared to be more determined with consistent play to win the match.”

Saar’s win also earned a bit of revenge. The Chargers defeated the Wildcats 4-3 earlier this season, with Manhas’ win over Saar the difference.

Wins by William Southard (6-1, 6-1) and Harrison Miller  (7-5, 6-2) led to a Wildcat sweep in singles.

Getchell (3-11) picked up its three points by taking the doubles matches: 1, Tom Dale/Jacob Nelson lost 4-6, 1-6; 2, Jozef Mendoza/Sean Kelley lost 2-6, 0-6; 3, Casiano Atienza/Ziwei Peng lost 2-6, 3-6.

Oak Harbor (4-8, 4-10) finishes its home schedule with Shorecrest (8-3, 10-4) at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8.
