A good time was had by all Sunday afternoon on the North Whidbey Middle School track at the first-ever “Free to Be” one-mile run.

Hosted by the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District, the event was open to girls and boys along with men and women, with competition broken down by age groups.

Special categories for the event included walking, wheelchair, stroller, two-person teams and “lovers” holding hands and although not all the categories had competitors, director Craig Carlson deemed the event a success.

Brandon Vagt, age 15, was the overall winner with a time of 5:20 for four laps around the quarter-mile middle school track.

Seventy-two-year-old Herm Eerkes had the best time for the senior competitors with a clocking of 7:14, and 6-year-old Ridgley Bidwill was timed at 10:04.

In the lovers event, Debbie and Frank Gallow held hands and completed the mile in a time of 11:45.
