Run IN Color raises funds for charities

Run IN Color continued its run of helping worthy causes when the second annual race and kids dash took place at Windjammer Park Saturday, Aug. 2.

Last year’s race, according to one of its organizers, Wendy Rue, was a way to honor those who were injured in the Boston Marathon bombing.

“Somehow an ‘explosion of color’ seemed to be just right to satisfy my desire to help and calm down my anger,” she said prior to last year’s Run IN Color.

Co-worker Tara Vollersten suggested they (Rue and Primavera Occupational, Physical and Hand Therapy) sponsor a run and give the proceeds ($3,000) to a local charity. Last year’s recipient was Citizens Against Domestic Violence.

This year, $5,000 went to the Wounded Warrior Project. Walmart also contributed $2,000.

“We believe that good things result when people come together with good goals — and experience some healthy fun in the process,” Rue said. “That is our therapy philosophy as well as a broader goal for our community.”

The event, which included a 5K and a quarter-mile kids dash, attracted 300 adults and 50 children.

“This year we added something new,” Rue said. “We did free running evaluations from June until race day. Preventing injuries is the key to long-term physical well-being. So often physical therapy is done after an injury.”

This year’s sponsors included Walmart, the Oak Harbor American Legion Post, Bayshore Chiropractic, North End Fitness Center, Coldwell Banker Koetje Real Estate, Popsies in Oak Harbor, Island Family Hearing Clinic, Tradewinds Insurance, the Whidbey Weekly, Island Chiropractor, Dr. Babe Barrio and Squadron Spirit Custom Apparel and Gifts.
