Rumble third, Smollack fourth

Oak Harbor junior Rodrick Rumble sailed over the bar at a height of 6-feet, 6 inches to finish third in the high jump event at the Class 4A boys track and field state championship meet held Friday and Saturday at Edgar Brown Stadium in Pasco.

Rumble was the only Wildcat boy to finish in the top five at the meet.

Will Hunter was eighth in the shot put.

For the girls, district 1,600 meter champion Mietra Smollack had a somewhat disappointing race, finishing in fourth place despite running a school record time of 4:58.16.

She did break the school record in the preliminaries of the 800 with a time of 2:14.12 and finished seventh overall.

As a team, the Oak Harbor boys and girls scored seven points each at the state meet.

Gig Harbor was boys champion with 48 points, followed by Lake Stevens from the WesCo North with 45. Evergreen High School was third with 43 points.

Gig Harbor also won the girls title scoring 49 points, followed by Mead and Bellarmine Prep with 55 and 54 points, respectively.
