Red Sox soaked by ‘Cats

The Oak Harbor/Coupeville Class A American Legion team is playing good baseball.

Entering Monday’s matchup with the Burlington Red Sox, coach John Humphries said he wasn’t sure of the team’s overall record, but the Wildcats were undefeated in league games.

Even though the game was dampened by intermittent rain showers the bats remained hot and Oak Harbor/Coupeville remained undefeated winning 14-4 with the contest being called with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning on the 10-run rule.

The hometown boys got off to a shaky start blowing a 3-1 lead when the Red Sox pushed across three runs in the top of the second inning to take a 4-3 advantage. After that, the game belonged to the Wildcats.

In the bottom of the second, the Wildcats put together singles off the bats of Kurtis Weaver, Shea Weaver and Bennett Richter, a walk, two Burlington errors and a double steal to score three times and reclaim the lead for good.

After walking three and giving up a double to Burlington’s Chris Vivanco in the first two innings, Richter settled down on the mound and kept the Red Rox lead off batters off base for the remainder of the game.

Humphries said this was the key to the Wildcats’ victory.

“Bennett started throwing good strikes on the first pitch and getting ahead in the count,” he said. “That’s what you have to do to be a successful pitcher.”

The Wildcats held on to their 6-4 lead until the bottom of the sixth inning when Burlington starting pitcher Urban Morales was replaced by Ambrose Maldonado.

Maldonado faced eight Oak Harbor/Coupeville batters without recording an out.

The Wildcats collected four hits off the Red Sox right-hander and were helped along by two walks and an error resulting in six runs crossing the plate.

Maldonado was replaced by Jake Steiner who gave up a single to Chase Zylstra to make the score 13-4.

The winning run crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly.

The Wildcats had 13 hits in the game, including a triple by Josh Fiske and a double by Shea Weaver.

“We’ve been focusing a lot on hitting,” Humphries said. “That’s what I stress, making good contact and putting the ball in play. Just put it in play and be aggressive at the plate.”

Fiske drove in four runs, Weaver three and Josh Higbee had two RBI.
