Eagles escape with victory

The Oak Harbor girls put up a ferocious fight, but ended up losing 52-49 to the visiting Arlington Eagles Tuesday night.

Arlington, always a good team, entered the Oak Harbor gym sporting a 5-2 overall record, but they had all they could handle from the home team, whose league record fell to 1-1 after the loss, 4-2 overall.

The Eagles built up a 6 point lead at intermission only to see the Wildcats cut it to 2 after three periods of play, setting up a frenetic fourth quarter of action.

Wildcat Jessica Denmon, who led all scorers with 18 points, tried valiantly to put he team ahead, but the ‘Cats couldn’t quite cut through Arlington’s lead.

The back-and-forth final period went down in history as advantage Arlington, by a 17-16 margin.

Arlington’s well-balanced attack was led by three players in double figures, Ginny Wilson with 12 points, Sheryl Scheppele 11 and Quinn Kesselring, 10 points.

Arlington’s coach described Denmon, a 5-5 junior guard, as a “great player,” in an area daily newspaper.

Oak Harbor also had three players in double figures, with Nicole Mowbray, a 5-11 forward, and Jennifer Janson, a 6-2 center, both contributing 10 points. Also for the Wildcats, Cheyenne Tubo, a 4-11 guard, scored 4; Cori Hendricksen, a 5-7 guard, 2; Clarissa Abadesco, a 5-5 sophomore, 2; Kathryn Fisken, a 5-7 forward, 2; and Tiffany Earnhart, a 5-6 forward, with 1 point.

Red Wolves beat Wolves

In a matchup of wolf packs, the Coupeville Wolves’ girls basketball team was chewed up Tuesday night by the visiting Red Wolves of Cedarcrest.

The Red Wolves jumped out to a 13-3 first quarter lead and never looked back on their way to a 52-29 victory. Solid Red Wolf defense combined with an off night for Coupeville shooters made it a runaway.

Top scorer for the evening was Cedarcrest’s Anne-Claire Den-Hartog who netted 19. For Coupeville, only Megan Smith with 13 points was able to crack double figures.

It was Coupeville’s first league match of the season, putting them at 0-1. Overall, the Wolves are 2-4 on the year. Cedarcrest improved to 5-2 overall.
