Big fourth quarter carries Wildcats

Friday’s WesCo North basketball game at Lake Stevens between the Vikings and Oak Harbor was low scoring and downright ugly.

Neither team had much success finding the basket in the first half, but the Wildcats managed to cling to a 19-13 halftime lead.

Lake Stevens held Oak Harbor just six points in the third period while scoring 13, to take a 26-25 lead into the final eight minutes of the game.

The Wildcats finally got their scoring machine in gear in the fourth quarter putting up 19 points to pull out a 44-34 victory.

The win keeps the Wildcats tied for second place with Arlington in the WesCo North. Both teams are 8-4 in league games and 11-5 overall.

Jessica Denmon scored a game-high 13 points for Oak Harbor and teammate Nicole Mowbray had 10.

Jennifer Jansen hit for eight points for the Wildcats and Cheyenne Tubo scored seven.

No player on the Lake Stevens roster scored in double figures.

Meghan Warbis had eight points and Kayla Bostwick along with Corrine Burke tallied seven points each.

Oak Harbor has a showdown game at 7:30 p.m. today in Arlington, with the winner taking over sole possession of second place in the WesCo North standings.

Wolves split Cascade weekend games

Coaches and players talk about leaving it all on the court and that’s what the Coupeville High School boys basketball team did Friday night.

Hosting the Cascade Conference’s number-two team, King’s High School, the Wolves put forth one of their top efforts to date this season and defeated the Knights 54-52 in overtime.

Down 12-9 after the first quarter, Coupeville bounced back with 11 points in the second period while holding the Knights to six, to take a 20-18 halftime advantage.

King’s outscored the Wolves 18-12 in the third period to hold a four point, 36-32, lead heading into the final quarter.

However, the Wolf Pack came storming back with 16 points in the fourth period to send the game into overtime and then put six points on the board to pull the victory out.

Cody Peters had 20 points, four assists and 11 rebounds for Coupeville. Teammates Hunter Hammer had 11 points and Jason Bagby scored 10 points.

South Whidbey 58, Coupeville 50

After Friday’s emotional victory, the Wolves were nearly spent in Saturday’s game at South Whidbey and lost 58-50 to the Falcons.

Coupeville trailed 26-19 at halftime, but cut the lead to four points, 39-35, at the end of three quarters of play.

Led by Riley Newman who scored a game-high 22 points, the Falcons picked up their fourth conference victory scoring 19 points in the fourth quarter.

Hammer scored 14 points for Coupeville (6-4 league, 9-6 overall). Peters hit for 13 and J.D. Wilcox scored 10.

Swim team loses final league meet

Oak Harbor High School’s dreams of an undefeated, championship WesCo North swim season were wiped out Thursday afternoon by host Marysville-Pilchuck.

The Wildcats managed to win just two events, the 200 individual medley and the 200 freestyle relay against the quick, deep Tomahawk squad.

It was evident how talented Marysville-Pilchuck is, due to the fact that second-place finishes by the Wildcats in the 200 medley relay (John Hu, Yale Rosen, Price Hu and Tyler Schell), the 500 freestyle (Schell) and the 100 backstroke (John Hu) were still below state qualification times.

The Wildcats (13-1 overall) now begin preparations for the 4A North Divisional preliminaries, starting Thursday, Feb. 12, at Marysville-Pilchuck.

Coupeville falls to Knights, Falcons

Even though both teams have struggled this season, there was a lot riding on Friday’s Cascade Conference game between Coupeville and King’s high schools.

Both teams are Class 1A schools playing in the combined 2A/1A league and with six games remaining on the schedule, the number-one seed into district play is still in question.

The Wolves were held to single-digit scoring in the first two periods to trail 19-15 at halftime, but mounted a bit of a rally in the third quarter scoring 12 points.

The wheels came off in the final eight minutes; however, and the Wolves managed to score just three points as the Knights pulled ahead to win 40-30.

Megan Smith scored 11 points and had 10 steals for Coupeville. Kassie Lawson scored seven points and freshman Taylor Sherman hit for six points.

South Whidbey 60, Coupeville 37

South Whidbey’s Lindsey Newman was a one-person wrecking crew in Saturday’s Cascade Conference game in Langley.

The senior scored 39 points, more than the entire Coupeville team, as the Falcons battered the Wolves 60-37.

After a 23-point first quarter, South Whidbey was on cruise control for the remainder of the game to pick up its fourth league win of the season.

Lawson led Coupeville (0-10 league, 3-13 overall) with nine points and Katie Smith added eight.
