A softball player with deep Oak Harbor roots helped a team from the Northwest win a United States Specialty Sports Association tournament title Thursday, July 16, in Orlando.

Maija Delarosa of Port Orchard was a member of the title-winning team, Elite Northwest, in the USA Elite Select All-American 14A Championship tournament.

Delarosa is the daughter of Bevileane Gabry, who grew up in Oak Harbor. Delarosa’s grandparents, Glenn and Violeta Gabry, and great-grandparents, Frank and Babe Gabry, are Oak Harbor residents.

Delarosa was one of 200 girls from five Western states to try out for the Northwest team in April and, after being one of two girls named as a “Top Performer,” was selected, according to Bevileane Gabry.

At the tournament, Elite Northwest lost three pool games but bounced back to with the championship over the Atlantic team.
