Samantha Petersen of CrossFit Whidbey finished 36th at the World CrossFit Games in Carson, Calif., July 13 to 15.

Peterson, who improved three spots from her 2011 finish, competed against the world’s best 47 women in the sport after finishing second in the six-state regional meet to qualify for the Games. Cheryl Brost of Eugene, who unseated Petersen as regional champ by one point earlier this year, finished 15th.

Peterson survived the first cut at the World Games after 10 events, but was eliminated from the competition when the list was trimmed to the top 24 for the 12th event. The top finishers faced 15 events.

Anna Thorisdottir of Iceland won the title for the second consecutive year.

Petersen was 27th among United States competitors; she was 30th in 2011.

Petersen’s best effort came in the fourth event, the broad jump, where she finished third. She was sixth in the fifth event, the ball toss, but did not place above 20th in any other.
