The Oak Harbor Babe Ruth baseball team lost big and won big at the Lynden Spring Fling Tournament Saturday and Sunday, May 11 and 12.

The tournament was played on a smaller (Pony League) diamond with 80-feet bases and a 54-feet pitching distance.

Oak Harbor dropped the opener to the Whatcom Heat 11-1 and then dumped Burlington 9-1.

Whatcom matched runs with the inning number for much of the game, getting one in the first, two in the second, three in the third and five in the fifth.

Whatcom finished with 10 hits and mixed those with walks, errors and hit batters to do its damage.

Oak Harbor recorded its two runs in the fourth. After an out, Dylan Bailey walked and scored on Robert Herring’s triple. Herring scored on Paul Spence’s sacrifice fly.

Chris Levy’s leadoff single was the only other Oak Harbor hit.

Lack of offense wasn’t a problem in game two as Oak Harbor finished with nine hits in four innings and scored four runs in each of the first two innings.

In the first, Bailey walked, Herring singled and Spence doubled them home. Dominic Stevens singled, then Paul Southerland singled in two runs.

In the second, Austin Hauter singled, Murphy walked and Levy singled in a run. A Jordan Davenport single, a Bailey walk and a Stevens’ sacrifice fly netted three more runs.

Oak Harbor’s final run came in the fourth when Levy singled, stole second and eventually scored on a passed ball.

Coach Bill Young said, “Overall we got through jitters, nerves and dropped balls in game one, to rebound with a solid effort in game two. We had some very good defensive efforts.”
