A punishing Oak Harbor High School offense eventually wore down Monroe’s defense and the Wildcats scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to defeat the Bearcats 28-20 in Friday WesCo North football action.

With the score tied 14-14 at halftime, Donovan Hunt scored on a 19- yard run at the 2:27 mark of the third quarter and Kevin Flavin’s extra point kick put Oak Harbor in front to stay, 21-14.

Stephen Lewis added an insurance touchdown on a 6-yard run with 12 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give the Wildcats some breathing room.

Hunt scored the first touchdown of the game for the Wildcats on an 8-yard run with 11:35 showing on the clock in the second quarter.After Monroe tied the game on a 2-yard run by Austin Bray, Lewis put Oak Harbor up 14-7 rambling 59 yards to pay dirt on the Wildcats’ second play from scrimmage after the ensuing kickoff.

The Bearcats tied the score with 2:17 left before halftime when quarterback Bryan Sonneveldt hooked up with wide receiver Connor Shelford from 23-yards out.

Oak Harbor coach Jay Turner said the team came out after the halftime break with a purpose and got the job done.

Monroe scored late in the game when Sonneveldt hit Kelen Jensen with an 18-yard scoring strike with 3:56 remaining in the game, but the Wildcats were able to run the clock out and preserve the victory.The Wildcats (1-1) play at Everett in a non-league game Friday, Sept 19.
