Oak Harbor tennis prevails over Monroe in Tuesday match

Oak Harbor High School’s boys’ tennis team started out the 2009 season by squeaking out a 4-3 win over Monroe at home Tuesday. The Wildcats picked up three team points by taking the No. 2-4 singles matches. Juniors Max O’Dell, 7-6 (4), 6-1; Ben Cardinal, 6-0, 6-2; and David DeGuzman, 6-2, 6-4, all won in straight sets.

The Wildcats picked up three team points by taking the No. 2-4 singles matches. Juniors Max O’Dell, 7-6 (4), 6-1; Ben Cardinal, 6-0, 6-2; and David DeGuzman, 6-2, 6-4, all won in straight sets.

The second doubles team of juniors Geoff Worley and Kevin Gagen picked up the final and decisive team point with a 6-2, 7-5 win.

Junior Josh Evans lost to Monroe’s Trevor Amsberry 0-6, 4-6, in first singles. Juniors Brandon Vagt and Chase Edwards lost a tough first doubles match 5-7, 6-2, 6-7 (2). In third doubles, sophomore Ben Harrison and freshman Will Southard fell 6-7(5), 5-7.

Wildcat coach Horace Mells said, “All the players played well and have shown great improvement since the first day of practice.”
