After getting nipped at Everett 4-3 Tuesday, April 22, the Oak Harbor High School tennis team turned the tables on Meadowdale and edged the visiting Mavericks 4-3 Thursday, April 23.

Oak Harbor (2-5, 5-5) plays its third match in three days when it hosts Stanwood (6-0, 8-1) at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24.

The Wildcats gave Everett a run this time around after losing 7-0 to the Seagulls earlier this season.

Tuesday, the two teams split the singles matches, then Everett took two of the three doubles matches to eke out the win.

Singles: 1, Mckenzie Perry lost 6-2, 6-4; 2, Faith Franssen lost 6-0, 6-1; 3, AnnaBelle Whitefoot won 6-1, 4-6, 7-5; 4, Erina Horikawa won 5-7, 6-4, 6-0.

Doubles: 1, Zena Husler/Alyssa Eden won 7-6(2), 6-0; Caterina Amsler/Hannah Gluth lost 6-4, 6-3; 3, Hope Drager/Patrice Woodworth lost 6-0, 6-2.

Oak Harbor coach Horace Mells said Perry played well and showed improvement since her first meeting with the Seagulls’ No. 1 player Kindall Gordon April 9.

Whitefoot rolled in the first set of second singles, then things got “tough after that,” Mells said. After dropping the second set and trailing most of the third, the sophomore rallied for the win.

Horikawa, playing in her first varsity singles match, overcame early nerves to win the final two sets, according to Mells.

Husler and Eden teamed up last year but played together for the first time this season. They started out slowly as they got reacquainted, Mells said, then “played near perfect tennis” after that.

In the win over Meadowdale, Perry and Whitefoot won big third sets to help secure the team win.

In first singles, Perry trailed 5-4 in the third set before winning three straight games to get the win.

Whitefoot withstood her opponent’s comeback to break serve to win in third singles.

Singles: 1, Perry won 4-6, 6-4, 7-5; 2, Franssen lost 6-4, 7-5; 3, Whitefoot won 6-4, 5-7, 6-4; 4, Gluth won 7-5, 6-2.

Doubles: 1, Husler/Eden won 6-4, 6-2; 2, Amsler/Ellysa Bonganay lost 6-3, 6-3; 3, Horikawa/Drager lost 6-3, 6-0.
