Oak Harbor runs by Mount Vernon / Track

Overwhelming Mount Vernon, the Oak Harbor High School track teams opened the 2017 regular season in fine fashion Thursday, March 23, at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

The meet was originally schedule to take place at Mount Vernon but was moved to Oak Harbor because of damage to the Bulldogs’ track.

The Wildcats girls thumped Mount Vernon 103-45, and the Oak Harbor boys won 87-58.

Oak Harbor girls won 13 of the 18 events, led by four two-time winners: Alexis Smith (1,600, 5:41.31; 3,200, 12:28.14), Kaitlyn Chelberg (100 hurdles, 16.87; 300 hurdles, 50.99) Jenna Cooley (400, 1:05.71; long jump, 15-09) and Julie Jansen (shot put, 27-07; discus, 101-01). Sarah Ulam tied Jansen in the shot put.

Cooley also finished first in the 4×400 relay (4:27.997) with Jessica Vester, Samantha Hines and Jennifer Turnek and was second in the 200 (28.89).

Smith nearly completed a sweep of the distance events by taking second in the 800 (2:37.26).

Hines also won the javelin (105-01) and was second in both hurdle events (100, 17.28; 300, 53.41).

Other winners for the Wildcats were Amaya Rittierodt (200, 28.64), Naomi Garcia (pole vault, 6-06) and Kristina Tirado (triple jump, 30-08.5).

Mac Nuanez (200, 23.76; 400, 52.87), Garren Guerrero (110 hurdles, 17.96; triple jump, 39-06) and Isaac Gomez (shot put, 43-00.25; discus, 139-05) each won two individual events for the Wildcat boys.

Nuanez added a first in the 4×400 relay (3:41.88) with Brycin McIntyre, Miguel Guzman and Dorian Hardin.

Guerrero added a second in the long jump (19-04) and 300 hurdles (45.21).

Other boys who picked up wins were Jake Hucko (1,600, 4:58.82), Ozell Jackson (high jump, 5-10) and Jordan Washington (long jump, 20-05).

Arlington and Stanwood visit Oak Harbor at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30.
