Three Oak Harbor runners earned all-American honors in the steeplechase at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic national championship meet Tuesday, July 26, in sweltering Wichita.
Recent Oak Harbor High School graduate Adrianna Royal (7:33.89) was nipped at the wire to finish second in the young women’s (17/18) 2,000-meter steeplechase as the temperatures soared above 100 degrees in Kansas.
Royal’s Federal Way Track Club teammate and OHHS senior Hannah Bressler was seventh (7:53.42).
Leslie Schilsky of Houston’s Northwest Fliers won in 7:33.22
OHHS junior Christina Wicker (7:40.84) of the Whidbey Island Running Club was also edged at the finish line and placed second in the intermediate girls (15/16) 2,000 steeplechase. She was beaten by Taylor Gerard (7:40.29) of Colorado.
WIRC’s John Rodeheffer (7:09.16), an OHHS freshman, grabbed 11th in the intermediate boys 2,000 steeplechase won by Jackson Bertoli of Indiana (6:30.79).
The top eight finishers in each event earn all-American honors.
The Junior Olympics continue through July 31.
Oak Harbor’s Alex Laiblin, Laura Rodeheffer and Dakota Powers have also qualified for the meet and will compete later this week.
