Oak Harbor loses two / Baseball

The Oak Harbor High School baseball team continued its struggle through the 2017 season, losing 6-5 at Shorecrest Friday, March 31, and 6-2 at Arlington Tuesday, April 4.

Oak Harbor (0-7, 0-9) hosts Arlington (5-2, 7-2) at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 6, for the second game of the series. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Oak Harbor Wednesday but was rained out.

Shorecrest 6, Oak Harbor 5

This was a heart breaker for the Wildcats. Oak Harbor, looking for its first win, held a 4-2 lead until the sixth inning when the Scots chased across four runs.

Shorecrest (2-4, 3-6) scored first, using a lead-off triple to get a run in the opening inning.

Oak Harbor responded with a four-run second. James Besaw walked and Kamren Mebane slugged a double to get things going. An error off the bat of Chad Spradlin tallied one run. Will Danielson doubled, Joe Dixon hit a single and, with two outs, Trent Benson singled to wrap up the rally.

The Scots scored once in the fourth and then erupted for four runs in the sixth. In the sixth with one out, the Wildcats hurt themselves by walking three consecutive batters. After a single, another walk added to the misery. Shorecrest, which had only two hits up to this point, then strung together three straight singles to complete the damage.

A single by Oak Harbor’s Dylan Bailey and a double by Steven Richards led to one run in the top of the seventh, but the ‘Cats came up one run short.

Shorecrest collected only six hits in the game but was aided by eight walks and two hit batters.

Benson singled twice to lead the Oak Harbor offense. The Wildcats also received hits from Bailey, Richards, Mebane, Danielson and Dixon.

Arlington 6, Oak Harbor 2

Arlington, one of the preseason favorites to win the Wesco North, scored twice in the second inning on only one hit to take an early lead Tuesday. Two walks, an error and a sacrifice fly helped the Eagles plate the pair of runs.

The Wildcats got one run back in the third. Bailey singled, then with two outs, Richards and Thomas Anderson added base hits to move Bailey along.

Oak Harbor then tied it with a run in the top of the fourth. Singles by Spradlin and Danielson and a walk to Aiden McCarthy loaded the bases. Caleb Fitzgerald drove in Spradlin with a ground out.

Arlington, which finished with 11 hits, regained the lead with two runs in the fourth on four hits.

The Eagles played add-on, scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings with the help of five hits.

Oak Harbor had a decent offensive day, rapping nine hits; however, the Wildcats left eight men on base.

Spradlin and Danielson each stroked a pair of singles; and Bailey, Benson, Richards, Anderson and Mebane collected base hits.
