In a game between girls basketball teams hoping to erase some of the memories from last season, Mariner stopped Oak Harbor 54-32 in the season opener Wednesday, Dec. 3, in South Everett.

The Marauders and Wildcats combined to win only one game last winter.

Oak Harbor shot down its chances of winning Wednesday by shooting poorly at the free throw line, connecting on just five of 24 foul shots. Committing 38 turnovers also didn’t help the Wildcats’ cause.

The turning point in the contest came in the third quarter when Oak Harbor, which trailed 30-22 at the half, tallied only two points and fell behind 42-24.

The game started well for the Wildcats. They scored 15 points in the first quarter to Mariner’s 17 but managed only single digit scoring in each of the other three periods.

Julie Jansen led Oak Harbor with seven points, while Bryn Langrock and Jinai Guzman added six each, according to coach Jon Atkins.

Hannah Hezekiah recorded 24 for Mariner.

Oak Harbor hosts Shorecrest (0-1) at 7:15 Friday, Dec. 5.
