Oak Harbor jumps on Falcons early, coasts to win / Girls basketball

The Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team blitzed South Whidbey in the first and third quarters, earning the Wildcats a 63-31 win over the visiting Falcons Friday, Dec. 7.

The Wildcats outscored South Whidbey 22-8 in the first period and 18-4 in the third.

In the opening quarter, Sarah Mensah scored 5 straight points, Miranda Wilson sank five free throws (Oak Harbor was 10 of 13 from the line in the quarter), and Olivia Waite and Mikhaela Cortez added 5 points each to help the Wildcats get off to a great start.

Payton Parks scored 5 points for Oak Harbor in the second period, but the Wildcats only outscored South Whidbey 12-10 in the frame and led 34-18 at the half.

The Wildcats dominated again in the third. Wilson hit a pair of three-pointers and the Wildcats scored 18 points to the Falcons 4, pushing their lead to 52-22.

Although Oak Harbor missed all eight of its free throws in the fourth quarter, it held an 11-9 scoring edge to claim the 32-point victory.

For the game, the Wildcats were 19-for-31 at the free throw line; South Whidbey went 7-for-20.

Ten different Wildcats scored, led by Wilson with 15. Cortez had 8; Olivia Waite 7; Monique Stolmeier, Jasmine Ford and Mensah 6 each; Parks 5, Anna Jones-Cortes 3 and Grace Waite 3.

Ford, Parks and Jones-Cortes each grabbed six rebounds, and Emily Gouge handed out three assists.

Oak Harbor created 53 turnover and scored 35 points off those SW mistakes. Ford had seven steals, Parks five and Olivia Waite four.

“We played better offensively, I thought we looked to score as a team,” coach Jon Atkins said.

Archbishop Murphy (2-1) comes to Oak Harbor (2-2) for the conference opener at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11.
