Oak Harbor edges South Whidbey 1-0 / Soccer

Oak Harbor’s dominance over the South Whidbey soccer team finally showed up on the scoreboard when the Wildcats’ Breanna Scheppler headed in the game’s only score midway through the second half Saturday, Sept. 15, at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

Oak Harbor controlled possession throughout and out-shot the Falcons 16-2. Both South Whidbey (2-2) attempts came in the first half, and one was on a free kick from midfield.

Scheppler’s goal came on a nice cross from Tiana Jackson at the 25 minute mark of the second half.

The Oak Harbor defense and goalies Jada Matthews and Traci Miller did the rest, keeping South Whidbey off the board.

The Wildcats produced several other excellent scoring opportunities. The best came at 14 minutes in the first half off another qualify cross by Jackson, but her teammate’s header missed the open net.

A minute later, Falcon keeper Nicole Helseth rejected a hard smash from 10 yards out to stop another Oak Harbor threat.

Minutes before Scheppler’s goal, Helseth blocked a shot in the penalty box and the rebound try.

Helseth finished with 10 saves.

Oak Harbor coach Mike Lonborg praised the play of his squad, especially Chloe Wallace, who had a “solid game.”

The Wildcats (0-3, 2-3) play Lynnwood (0-1-1, 0-2-2) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18.
