Oak Harbor challenges Everett for state berth / Volleyball

The Oak Harbor High School volleyball team will attempt to extend its season when it meets Everett at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in a winner-to-state/loser-out match in the district tournament at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

The Wildcats dropped into the consolation match after losing 3-0 to Snohomish in the district semifinals Thursday, Nov. 8.

Unbeaten Snohomish (16-0) will face another undefeated team, Ferndale (17-0), in the district title match at 1 p.m. Saturday. Ferndale is currently ranked No. 1 and Snohomish No. 4 in the state 3A poll.

Stanwood (13-3) and Lynnwood (11-6) also square off at 11 a.m. in another winner-to-state/loser out match to determine the final of four teams moving on to state.

Everett earned the right to face Oak Harbor after beating Arlington 3-0 in a loser-out match Thursday.

The Seagulls (12-6) are one of only three teams to defeat Oak Harbor (12-4) during the regular season, winning 3-1 (25-18, 13-25, 25-12, 26-24) in Oak Harbor Oct. 11.

The Wildcats last trip to the state tournament came in 2013 when Oak Harbor finished sixth.

Snohomish 3, Oak Harbor 0

The Panthers edged the Wildcats 3-2 in league play Oct. 16 but blanked Oak Harbor this time around, 25-22, 25-13, 25-19.

Snohomish, using a decisive run in each set, came from behind to win the first game.

The Wildcats, with multiple kills from Cami Bristow, Leielle Salinger and Morgan Pease, jumped on the Panthers early and led most of the set.

Oak Harbor held a 19-16 lead when the Panthers rattled off five straight points to go ahead 21-19. The Wildcats never recovered, and the blow of the loss hung over the team the remainder of the match.

Oak Harbor jumped to a 4-1 lead in the second set, then the Panthers responded with an 8-1 run to take control.

Snohomish zipped to a 4-1 lead in the third game, then Oak Harbor came back to knot the score at 12.

The match was tied at 18 when Snohomish secured the match by finishing on a 7-1 run.

After the early stages of the first set, Oak Harbor couldn’t get into a rhythm on offense. Snohomish used a variety of attacks and strong serving to keep the Wildcats out of sync.

Oak Harbor also had difficulty with the Panthers’ height, which produced seven stuff blocks.

“They were tough to score against,” Oak Harbor coach Kerri Molitor said. “Their middles played well.”

“Snohomish is a good team, but we didn’t play our defense,” she added, noting her club was often out of position.

“We need to trust each other.”

Bristow led the Wildcats with 11 kills, six digs and two aces. Leah Quidachay had 23 assists and six digs; Pease collected five kills and four digs; Salinger finished with seven kills; and Ceirra Dean registered 13 digs.

Mackenzie Whyte paced the Panthers with 14 kills; Sarah Campfield had seven kills and five blocks.
